Recently I began painting again. It has been a long time since I opened my paints boxes. (You know it by the separation of layers in the tubes of paint!) Since having my baby I have not really had the time to dedicate to art, as completing the final stages of my PhD while settling into my new role as a mum has been an exciting, albeit time-consuming, challenge.
So when I got a welcome request from a collector to see my current body of work, it was a great opportunity to revisit the paintings patiently waiting for me in my studio and to see them with a fresh perspective. The result? Three new exciting directions I am eager to develop and a new website to share my art.
For a long time now I have been thinking about the dialogue between the natural world and the synthetic layers we – humans – implement over it. The struggle of Nature to survive its most intelligent species seems ironic. Yet here we are, well into the 21st century and facing so many problems with the imbalance of our ecosystems. Art is not exactly an environmentally friendly endeavour, but it has always been a tool to communicate important messages. From this come two of my latest explorations: natural textures in synthetic layers, and painting on cardboard. Both collections are now in development. So watch this space for news and images of the latest artworks!
My third new line of development is inspired by the the maturation of a child’s vision. From a blurred vision of simple black and white shapes, to discerning individual colours, to delighting in characters and smiley faces and being able to pick a favourite colour. A little bit of animation mixed with colour indulgence. Watch this space!
