Contemporary art: emotion in colour

About

I am a Brisbane-based artist with an interest in the relationship between colour and line, and the spatial perception of art. I began painting as an art history student in order to better understand the media and the craft I was writing about. Then I got addicted.

Artist Statement
My works in acrylics stems from the vibrancy and immediacy of emotions, where colour reflects the emotional spectrum experienced by humans, while the fast-drying process of the acrylic medium echoes the pace of our lives today, as well as the need to stop and appreciate the world around us and its strangeness. Colour associations can be both personal and cultural, and often they convey emotions clearer than words. My art represents subconscious desires, fears, hopes and pains, and the paintings ‘speak’ to the viewer on an equally personal level.

My work in watercolour focusses on atmosphere and on the magic of putting a banal and insignificant detail into the spotlight. I hope to ‘pause’ my audience and get them to explore the little things in what they see around them every day. Seeing the world through a child’s eyes, noticing something that would otherwise be left unseen, forgotten is a wonderful gift that can help us grow closer to the world we live in, to become more intimate with it.

What else do I do? I am also an art historian and a curator. I love to learn languages and to meet new people. I love Latin dance and classical music.

Where do I draw my inspiration? Everywhere around me. Once I painted a work inspired by a chameleon rose on my terrace. Sometimes I just like to see where the colours will take me. Lately I have been excited about the textures achieved with a palette knife, and dark background.

Who are my favourite artists? At the moment my favourites are modernists Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Australian Fred Williams, Dorrit Black, and contemporary artists Isabelle Bonzom, John Lovett, and Emma McAdam-Marmont.
